Starting Up Your First Blog

Blogging

An interesting fact that you may enjoy is that everyday, 100,000 new blogs are started. One of those is you if you start your blog today. That’s an interesting fact because in a week, 700,000 blogs have been started. And in one month, 2,800,000 blogs have been started. Now, as blogging has become more and more profitable, a lot of people have tried their hands at it only to fail. Why do they fail? They give up too soon.

If you want to start a blog and I’ll tell you from personal experience, it is an incredible thing, do it the right way. Stay away from WordPress.com and blogger.com. I know, I know, free is great. Free is not great if you don’t have an identity. If you have an identity, you are going to be remembered. What’s easier to remember? CoolBlogger.com or CoolBlogger.Wordpress.com. Which do you think will be easier to remember?

That brings me to my first…second piece of advice. Pick a domain name that really works for you. Whether it is a keyword domain name or something witty, make it so you can brand it. That means if you’re going to make a Mixed-Martial-Arts blog, don’t make the domain name: PuppiesAreCute.com. That doesn’t make sense. Pick a domain name that you can brand and, if at all possible, have a keyword in it that you want to rank for.

Getting hosting is very important…The truth is, the type of hosting you get all depends on what you’re planning on doing. My network of blogs requires a VPS. Other blogs only require shared hosting. It all depends on you. I’ll go into more detail in a future post all about hosting, but there are two things to look out for: overselling and up time. Don’t believe offers where they promise you unlimited anything and make sure that they have a guarantee 99.9% up time. That’s imperative.

Finally, go to your cpanel once you’ve connected your domain name to your hosting and install the latest version of Wordpress. I suggest Wordpress. Others say use a different software, I have always used Wordpress and have found that I get the most bang for my buck…Wait, it’s free. It’s free and a lot of the big bloggers use it. I strongly suggest it and I know others do as well.

Starting a blog is easy. I know the above is a quick way of talking about a lot of things, but setting up a blog is really quite easy once you’ve figured out what you want to do. Once you have figured out that you want a blog about Mixed-Martial-Arts, all that matters is that you begin to prepare for it. Find a good domain, get some hosting, set up WordPress.

Tomorrow, I’ll tell you the next step in preparing your blog for the real world. It’s as easy as finding a theme that works and writing some interesting content. Stay tuned…
